Nelspruit sits in the middle of South Africa's most concentrated citrus and macadamia country, an hour from the Mozambique border, and on the busiest cross-border freight corridor in southern Africa. AquaCat Containers supplies reefer cold storage out of our Ballito yard into Mbombela and the broader Lowveld for packers, exporters, processors, and the cross-border logistics operators running stock through Komatipoort to Maputo.
What we deliver in Nelspruit
A delivery into Nelspruit runs 4 to 6 working days from order confirmation. Ballito to Mbombela is roughly 850 km — N3 up to Gauteng, then N4 east through Witbank and Belfast — a corridor we run regularly. The unit arrives on a flatbed, gets craned or rolled into position, and runs at temperature on site before our delivery team leaves. Sites along the Riverside business node, the Rocky Drift industrial belt, and across the packhouse country between Nelspruit and White River are all on the standard route.
We coordinate the truck, the crane lift if your site needs it, and the power connection. Many Lowveld sites — particularly out on packhouse properties — run partly or fully on generator and we set up the leads and changeover before signoff.
Site readiness is part of how we plan a delivery. The unit needs a level base. Power must match the unit's draw.
Crane access has to be confirmed if the yard layout is tight or there are overhead obstructions. Our delivery coordinator runs through these by phone the day before arrival.
This matters more on Lowveld sites than on city deliveries — packhouse yards in citrus country are not always laid out for crane work, and a five-minute call ahead saves a wasted truck run. For sites near the Mozambique border, we also confirm the access route and any seasonal road condition that might affect the haul.
Industries we serve in Nelspruit
Three industries dominate AquaCat's work in this region, and they all run hard in the same calendar window.
Citrus exports. Mpumalanga is one of the world's largest citrus-producing regions and Nelspruit sits at the centre of it. Packhouses, exporters, and consolidators handle a peak that runs from roughly May through September, and demand for cold storage during that window goes vertical.
A reefer or six on the back of a packhouse buys you flexibility you can't build in time. We supply units across the citrus belt — Hazyview, Malelane, Komatipoort, and the country between — for exactly this. Our agriculture page covers the spec.
Macadamia processing. South Africa is now the world's largest producer of macadamias, and the Lowveld around Nelspruit is the heart of the industry. Processors handling nut-in-shell, kernel grading, and pre-export consolidation use reefers as buffer storage during the harvest pulse and then for held inventory waiting on shipment. We work with macadamia processors directly.
Maputo corridor cross-border freight. This is where Nelspruit's geography pays off. The N4 east of Mbombela carries refrigerated freight to Maputo every day, and operators staging consolidation loads on the South African side need short-term cold storage that scales. Reefers parked at logistics yards in Komatipoort or just west of the border give that flexibility without permanent infrastructure. The unit itself stays on the South African side — we are an SA fleet — but it serves freight that is going onto cross-border trucks for SADC dispatch.
If your operation needs butchery-grade cold for game processing or the lodge supply chain that runs through the Lowveld, our butchery page covers the spec.
Local context: Riverside, the packhouse country, and the Maputo road
Nelspruit's commercial geography is split between Riverside — the modern node on the eastern side with the regional government complex and most of the formal office and retail — and the older industrial mix around Rocky Drift and West Acres. AquaCat delivers across both, and we work with operators based at logistics yards along the N4 toward Komatipoort and out into the packhouse properties surrounding White River and Hazyview.
Pull back further and you have the Lowveld itself — citrus, macadamia, and sugarcane country running north toward Hoedspruit, east to the Mozambique border, and south toward Barberton and Kaapmuiden. Most of our delivery runs into this region pass through White River, and packhouses in the area between Nelspruit and the border are usually a short variation on a planned route. The Maputo corridor — the N4 from Mbombela through Komatipoort and across into Mozambique — is one of the most active SADC trade routes and a regular delivery axis for us.
What you'd ask us about
Four scenarios come up consistently in the Lowveld:
A citrus packhouse outside Malelane is running peak season and needs four extra 12m reefers on site for sixteen weeks while the main store is at full capacity. We deliver, commission, leave them running, collect at the end of the season. Designed to meet the relevant export-citrus temperature requirements, with logging where the customer's compliance team needs the trail.
A macadamia processor in White River needs cold buffer for held kernel inventory waiting on a delayed export shipment. They take a 6m unit on a rolling monthly arrangement until the consignment ships. We have customers who do this every year — a planned buffer that flexes around export timing.
A logistics operator in Komatipoort is consolidating refrigerated freight bound for Maputo and needs short-term cold storage on their yard for the run-up to a vessel sailing date. We drop a unit, they use it for the staging window, we collect when the cargo moves. The unit itself stays on the South African side at all times.
A lodge or game farm in the Hazyview corridor needs cold storage for a peak holiday season — game processing, kitchen surge, or storage for a private events programme. Single-unit hire on a short-term basis works fine, and we have delivered into properties off the main routes where access has needed planning.
Across all four: define what you are storing, the temperature window, and the term. We quote what fits the operation rather than what suits the yard.
Pricing and contracts
We do not publish rate cards. Reefer pricing depends on size, term, site access, and whether you are running on grid or generator — generic numbers would not give you anything useful. Send us the basics — what you are storing, target temperature, term, where in Mpumalanga the site is — and we come back with a quote, usually the same day.
Rental terms are flexible. Short-term seasonal hire that fits a citrus or macadamia harvest, monthly rolling arrangements, or open-ended placements. No lock-in contract. If the season changes shape on you, we adjust.
FAQ
How quickly can you deliver from Ballito to Nelspruit? Standard window is 4 to 6 working days from order confirmation, covering the road haul, on-site commissioning, and verifying the unit is at temperature before our team leaves. In peak citrus season we plan further ahead — book early if you know your harvest window.
Do you deliver to packhouses in Hazyview, Malelane, and Komatipoort? Yes. All three are regular delivery destinations and most are a short variation on our standard Nelspruit run. Tell us the property address when you request a quote and we will give you a delivery window.
Can you support cross-border freight staging to Maputo? Yes for staging on the South African side. Our reefer fleet is South African-registered and the unit itself stays in the country, but we have customers using yards near Komatipoort to consolidate cold stock before it goes onto cross-border trucks for the run into Mozambique and onward SADC dispatch.
What about power on remote packhouse sites? All our units are genset-ready, which matters in the Lowveld where grid reliability varies and many packhouses already run hybrid power setups. We advise on generator sizing for the unit you are taking. Our load-shedding guide covers the practicalities.
