Most Ballito businesses needing a reefer container call us late. The cold room failed on a Friday, a long weekend is coming, and stock is at risk. We rent and service refrigerated containers across the KZN North Coast from our yard at Umhlali Golf Estate, off Compensation Drive. This page walks through what reefer hire in Ballito actually looks like — from the moment you ring through to the moment a unit is plugged in and pulling down on your slab.
We deal in 6m and 12m sizes and multiples thereof. Smaller 3m units exist on request for tight courtyards or trial runs. Everything else here is what you can expect when you book.
Lead Time From Order to Delivery
Standard turnaround on the North Coast is 24 to 72 hours from a signed quote. Tight runs of 12 hours have happened, but only when we have a serviced unit on the yard and a crane truck on standby. Long-weekend or month-end demand stretches lead times.
Two things speed your job up: a confirmed delivery address with photos of the placement spot, and confirmation of available power. Two things slow it down: site access surveys, and waiting on a customer to clear obstructions. If you can send a photo of the slab and a photo of the power point, we can usually skip a site visit.
Hire periods run from a single day to multi-year contracts. Most Ballito work falls into two buckets — short emergency hire during a cold-room breakdown, and rolling monthly hire for businesses that have outgrown a permanent room.
What Arrives On the Day
A crane truck arrives with the reefer chained down on the deck. Our driver assesses the placement, lifts the unit clear, and sets it on your slab. The whole placement usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
You need a level, load-bearing surface — concrete or compacted hardstand — with about 1m clearance on the condenser end for airflow. The unit sits on its own steel feet. No foundations. If the slab is questionable, send photos before the day.
Once placed, our technician plugs the unit in, sets your target temperature on the controller, and runs the pull-down test. A 6m reefer at ambient will pull down to -18 °C in roughly 4 to 6 hours. A 12m takes longer, sometimes 8 hours. Plan your stock load-in around that.
Sizing — 3m, 6m or 12m
The sizing wizard on the main site does most of the maths, but the rough rules of thumb hold for most Ballito jobs.
A 3m unit suits trial runs, small caterers, or pop-up retail. Capacity is around 14 to 18 cubic metres of usable internal volume.
A 6m unit is the workhorse — restaurants, butchers, smaller pharmacies, event hire. Around 28 to 32 cubic metres usable. Most Ballito and Umhlali sites take a 6m without site survey.
A 12m unit suits wholesalers, high-volume kitchens, and businesses storing palletised stock. Around 60 to 65 cubic metres usable, takes 10 to 11 standard pallets at floor level.
If your stock turn is high, oversize. A unit running with airflow choked by overstuffing burns more electricity and pulls down slowly when the door swings.
Power — Single-Phase vs 3-Phase
This catches first-time hirers out. A 6m reefer runs on 3-phase 400V, 32A — not standard household single-phase. A 12m needs the same 3-phase supply but draws more current under pull-down.
Most Ballito commercial premises along Compensation Drive, Ballito Junction and the Sandra Road industrial strip have 3-phase already. Standalone homes, smaller retail, and some Umhlali properties don't. If your site is single-phase only, two options exist: rent a 3-phase generator alongside the reefer, or arrange a phase upgrade with the local council before the unit lands.
For load-shedding-prone sites we rent generator-paired setups. Ask for the genset option in your quote and we'll size it to the unit.
R638 Hygiene if You're Storing Food
The Department of Health's Regulation R638 governs food premises in South Africa. Reefer interiors used for food storage need to be cleanable, with smooth walls, sealed floors, and food-grade finishes. Standard refrigerated containers are aluminium-lined with a T-bar floor — designed to meet R638 hygiene expectations for ambient food storage. For butchery work, high-care, or pharmacy applications we fit a smooth marine-ply or stainless overlay.
We don't certify your premises. That sits with the local Environmental Health Practitioner. What we do is supply units built to the specs the EHP will check against, and supply you with the build sheet on request.
Service — What's in the Hire
All our hire units come with Certified Reefer technicians on all makes. A scheduled service runs every 90 days for long-term hire, with a full report against the SLV1 / SLV2 / SLV3 maintenance tier you've selected.
SLV1 covers callout and standard repair labour. SLV2 adds preventative parts. SLV3 is full-cover including refrigerant top-ups, compressor faults, and replacement unit if a swap is needed. Most Ballito short-term hire defaults to SLV1. Multi-month food and pharma hire usually moves to SLV2 or SLV3.
Remote temperature monitoring is offered as an add-on. The cellular logger sits inside the unit, reports every 5 minutes, and pings your phone if the temperature drifts beyond your set threshold. For pharma and high-value stock, this isn't optional — it's how you prove cold-chain integrity if anything goes wrong.
Monthly Rate — How Quotes Work
We don't publish flat monthly rates. The honest reason is that no two jobs are the same. A 6m unit on a 3-month food hire in Salt Rock with SLV1 service costs differently from the same 6m on an 18-month pharma contract with SLV3 and remote monitoring.
Quote variables: unit size, hire duration, service tier, distance from our Ballito yard, generator-paired or grid, and any internal fit-out. A typical Ballito quote lands inside 24 hours of enquiry.
Our yard runs in excess of 200 units across the KZN fleet, so unit availability is rarely the constraint — turnaround time on the quote is mostly down to how quickly we can confirm placement and power.
FAQs
How far from Ballito will you deliver? Anywhere on the KZN North Coast — from Umhlanga up through Salt Rock, Sheffield, Zinkwazi and Mtunzini. Further afield is quoted case by case.
Can I run the unit on a generator only? Yes. We rent generator-paired setups for off-grid sites. Sized to match the reefer draw and the run hours you need.
What happens when the hire ends? We send the same crane truck. Unit is unplugged, lifted off, and removed. Site is back to bare slab usually within an hour.
Can I extend the hire mid-contract? Yes. Most hires extend by phone — confirm the new end date and we update the rental schedule. Long extensions sometimes trigger a service visit before continuing.
Do you take stock out before removal? No. The customer empties the unit before collection day. We've had a few requests to leave the unit running while stock is moved into a permanent room across the yard — that's fine, just flag it on the booking.
What if the slab isn't ready on the day? The truck waits, then leaves if access stays blocked beyond 30 minutes. A failed-delivery callout is charged. Send photos of the placement spot the day before so we can flag issues early.
